A Safe Space for Widows to Connect and Heal with Pam Baker

In this episode of Widow, Wisdom and Wealth™, we meet Pam Baker, the inspiring founder of Widows Who Wine. Pam’s journey into widowhood began with the loss of her husband, John, a certified financial planner. Her story is one of resilience, community, and the power of shared experiences.

A Love Story and a Legacy

Pam’s love story with John began at Eckerd College, where they met and eventually married. Together, they built a life and a family, raising four children while John pursued a career in financial planning. Pam supported him by managing the business operations from home, balancing her role as a mother and a partner in their financial planning practice.

The Challenge of Loss

In 2018, John’s health took a turn when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. Despite the challenges, Pam and her family rallied around John, utilizing both traditional and alternative medicine to support his treatment. The journey was difficult, but it brought the family closer together, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which Pam describes as a blessing in disguise for the additional time it afforded them.

Creating a Community of Support

After John’s passing in 2021, Pam sought support through grief groups but found them lacking in the connection she needed. This led to the creation of Widows Who Wine, a social group for widows to connect and support each other. The group has grown to over 350 members, offering a variety of activities from social gatherings to educational workshops.

Empowering Through Education

Pam’s initiative extends beyond social support. Her book, “Where’s the Key to the Safe?” co-written with her nephew, provides practical advice on estate planning and financial preparedness. Pam emphasizes the importance of having these conversations early, to avoid the stress of managing finances while grieving.

A Message of Hope and Resilience

Pam’s story is a testament to the strength found in community and the importance of planning for the future. Through Widows Who Wine, she has created a space where women can find the best friends they never knew they needed, offering peer support and shared experiences. Her work is a reminder that even in the face of loss, there is hope, community, and the opportunity to build a new chapter filled with love and laughter.
